q is for q hands

when i had a circle of preschoolers who needed a little “wowing.” the moments when someone simply stands up and walks away, when two others whimper like dogs and i realize they’ve not stopped their work time game, when the few that were sitting on their little piece of tape are now looking bored, when there is a full volume conversation about halloween costumes (from nearly 4 months ago)…get the image?

the circle time focus for the day was that U usually follows Q. i decided to quickly write a Q on one hand a U on the other. then sing the the letters Q, U, Q, U, Q, U, Q, U while opening my hands for the correct letter.

i is for i spy

my valentine to preschoolers this year was an i spy bottle.

inside there are white beans, heart beads, mini valentine erasers, jewels and mirrors.

i’m counting on the preschoolers leaving the bottles taped up tightly! : )

p is for pink

to the tune of “if you’re happy and you know it…”

when you mix red and white you get pink

a new color magically

with a squirt of red and a squirt of white in a sealed baggie, we squished and squashed them.

red + white = pink

then we snipped the ends and squirted out the pink paint (kind of like frosting!).

there were lots of different brushes and rollers to choose from (and extra bathroom clean up after handwashing). : )

also discovered was that the other end of the paintbrush can be used to “write” in the paint.

in this color blending experiment, we discovered what happens with extra red….

when the paper dried we cut hearts from it!

some of the hearts went to the valentine station and some of the hearts were turned into valentines for the grandma and grandpa friends.

by the way, my favorite moment was when i brought out the ketchup bottle from k week (with red paint in it…which i highly recommnend…as well as yelow paint in a mustard bottle, white paint in a milk jug, etc.) and poured it on the paper. oh, funny stuff. some of the preschoolers gave a preschool version of rolling their eyes at me.

we had an ever-expanding “valentine station” in the classroom for the first half of february.

paper hearts, pipe cleaners (or am i not supposed to call them that anymore?), glue, red and pink crayons, colored pencils, scissors, tape (!!!!), bulletin board borders, doilies, stickers, etc.

we added an owl card for o week. we added heart cutting supplies after i watched a preschooler do it on his own.

h is for hearts (in the block corner)

i set out a stack of wooden thrifted hearts.  i imagined them being taken to the housekeeping corner as “cookies.”  they were.

i didn’t imagine them being taken to the block corner to be used so intentionally.  awesome.
