apples, headphones, a rainbow candle and bare feet: MONDAY RED DAY

What a sweet start to the 2023-2024 school year! In this class of 14, 7 are new to preschool and 7 are returning from last year. We had 4 volunteers and Pastor Shana come visit. We saw reminders of the beauty of a multi-age classroom in the play that emerged between the oldest and youngest. We came upon an interaction between two children who didn’t previously know each other…”I think she thinks I’m a big brother so I’m helping her!”

Every corner of the classroom was explored: the easel, the puppet stage, the instrument corner, the block rug, the doll house, the project shelf and the nature corner. The library was hopping most of the morning and briefly turned into a bank run by a very wealthy king. The cloud dough was well attended the whole morning as well. Our returning children did an incredible job of showing up as peer models-demonstrating play and cooperation.

Should you eat the apple you brought home today?

No! It’s made out of paper! But it does look quite realistic!

We intentionally start the year with lots of room for self direction. Today children did their alphabet project when and where they wanted anytime before Circle Time. I love seeing the hands shake with exertion as they squeeze the glue out. Look at all those apple a shapes!

After Snack Time we had play time with optional song games singing Apples and Bananas and the Vowel Song (to the tune of BINGO). I used our sign language blocks as visual and tangible cues for our vowels. This turned very silly as the children took turns rearranging the blocks which meant me having to sing them in new orders! So tricky for me!

Did you wear headphones today?

Maybe! I purchased a class pack of headphones as an option for all children. They hang in cubbies and can be worn anytime. While they don’t cancel all noise, they do provide a fantastic muffled experience.

Why did someone get a rainbow candle?

It was their Birthday Celebration Day! Snack Time today was honoring a September birthday friend! This year children will get a battery candle that when turned on, transitions through the rainbow colors. We had applesauce just like we found in our book and yummy birthday treats!

note: no children were invited to smile during these photos. hahahahaha

I demonstrated the teacher stool (a low rolling stool that is in the center of the tables) and Grandpa Kelven was the Snack Store. Children had the option to carry their trays to the kitchen where Grandpa Norm and Grandma Vicki were waiting.

Can you take your shoes off at preschool?

YES!

A landmark of children’s time here is the freedom to take their shoes and socks off and on as they like. It was a question from one friend within moments of arriving. Shoes and socks coming off is a simple and significant opportunity for children to practice noticing their bodies and practicing their own agency. At this age it also presents the opportunity to connect with someone because most often there is assistance needed. Look at all these shoeless feet!

Where did you stand to line up?

On the rainbow tape AKA the rainbow snake!

At the end of the day, we lined up (what a feat!) and walked through the rain to get to the pavilion while we waited for our grown ups. The only tears were a brief lament that the day was over. I am so grateful that this is my work.

The volunteers today were Grandpa Norm, Grandma Vicki, Grandpa Kelven and Ms Eliza. Grandma Mona and Pastor Shana also stopped by!

2 teachers, 8 volunteers and 1 pastor: MEET THE TEACHER FRIENDS OF 23-24

We are looking forward to our 2023-2024 school year. This year’s group of teacher friends is a highly invested and sweet group of folks. We share a dedication to preserving each child’s dignity and celebrating what they bring to this world! We’re grateful to have a pastor friend in the building again. You can read more about Pastor Shana on our church website here.

Some volunteers will have consistent schedules and some will come for special events or when their schedules allow. We also look forward to more visitors from the community including Bethel College and Newton High School. You can read more about our staff and volunteer requirements here.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Bubble wrap printing in 2013

Click to see the original 2013 post.

I appreciate the challenge of finding activities where the process is the priority but there is also a take home product. Printing is perfect!

In 2013 (and many times since) we painted on bubble wrap taped to a table with hands and foam brushes and then made prints of the painted bubble wrap.

It activity is very Eric Carle-esque and a great bridge activity from the B work of butterflies to the C work of caterpillars.

2 surprised mothers, making pie and a water slide: MONDAY BLUEBERRY DAY

Today was the last Play Day for 2023 so I wore my rainbow dress. Over half of the friends will head to new schools next month and the others will be back with us in September. The classroom went from really loud to really quiet a few times which felt appropriate for the day. Read on for some questions and answers…

What was the loud banging noise at the beginning of the day? Dot painters! A project that everyone did before Circle Time was trying to match the shade of the real blueberries with our dot painters. Using blue, purple and black shades, there were some very realistic shades! Here is a link to a live video of it!

We started inside today so that we could end the day with full on water play (and not have to bring our wet and dirty bodies inside). These sweet kids played hard and fast in every corner of the room.

What pictures were on the bottom of the paint papers? The surprised mothers from Blueberries for Sal! The human mother was surprised that the little bear was following her and the bear mother was surprised that the little human was following her. We read through the book when we went to Circle Time. This was one of the very quiet times. We also looked at pictures of one friend who picked real blueberries on a trip. She said they tasted better than any blueberries she ever had from a store!

Such a cozy story time…I love letting children choose what they need for their best story experience

What was on your little plate at snack time? Blueberries, a mini puff pastry crust and crackers. Ms Eliza walked around with whipped cream for anyone who wanted some on their pie or on their plate. Some people had blueberries under the whipped cream and on top of the whipped cream! Then we took the whipped cream and crackers outside for anyone who wanted more.

Where did Ms Kristin put the hose for the first time ever? On the slide! First we put the hose on the little plastic slide and then decided to put it on the slide at the top of the hill. It was very satisfying! We still had other slides that weren’t water slides if people wanted a dry experience.

These two figured out that the magnet wands can work on other boards!

At the end of the day, we wished each other well, got our last day certificates and chose bubbles to take home. Hooray for a fun July and school year together!

FUNNY FACT FROM TODAY: Ms Kristin and a friend wore the same shoes today so good thing we didn’t get too mixed up today.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Mr Travon in 2013

Mr Travon is one of many teacher friends who have come to us from Bethel College. The photo is from 2013 which means these kids are well into the teenage years. They loved him so much!

Our preschool has benefited from having young and curious adults from Bethel College, Hesston College and Newton High School spend time in our classroom from a variety of departments: education, psychology, health and fitness, social work, maintenance and community outreach.

Facebook post from 2013

We follow our strict volunteer practices/procedures to ensure everyone’s safety and protection. While it takes effort to maintain those protocols, we are committed to them.
