c is for cozy

i like the experience of having our circle time rug in the center of our room, but the rug alone looked stark and ungrounded.

it didn’t feel practical to keep the canopy and rocking chairs, though.  instead i cut strips of the fabric and created the feel of walls around our rug.  i’ve been surprised that none of the fabric has been pulled down yet!  i will need to take it down for the weekend anyway, but it has been worth the experience of flowing walls.

n is for (happy!) new year

remembering the fun from last year, we played this game again.  it (doesn’t really) require a horn to blow. : )

so we used old calendars and catalogs to make some.  i displayed a page from amanda dade’s new year’s parade that we read before playing our game.

snipping along one side, then rolling up, taping, and folding down the snips.

the game is played with our judy clock.  i really wish we had enough for everyone, but it works for me to hold the clock. we start at one o’clock and head through the hours until 12:00. the children really watch carefully and i delight in planting the seed of time telling.  then there is jumping up and hooting and hollering and happy-new-year yelling!

p is for present (for our families)

if you are a preschool family and you haven’t opened one of these, go check your child’s backpack and don’t read further!

back when we painted our stars, we also painted these from discount school supply.

then we used the same photos as we use on our picture board.

ms. carol acted as “glitter fairy” one morning and added beautiful glitter designs.

then there was name writing and ornament wrapping.  when preschoolers are learning to “write” their names, i always emphasize the importance of scribbling, not perfect letter formation.  when children ask for traditional letter formation help, i “write” it first with my fingernail which leaves a little indentation as a guide.  but one of my favorite stages is when i call out their name letter by letter and the children make little scribble marks for each letter.

really sweet.
