r is for race

hum the olympic theme song to yourself, find something to hit that sounds like a cowbell, hoop and holler at the top of your lungs, find someone who has racing flags to lend you, tape a track on your floor, buy medals in the party section:

race day

you are at our preschool race days.

race day

this was a highlight of the year.

race day

we needed water since we were allowed to run at any point in the day.

race day

there were certificates and a couple of teachers serving as official timekeepers with the help of ipods.

race day

we used a handmade torch to pass off to each other.

race day

running was optional, but everyone did.  you could choose your route (there are three to choose from).  most chose the longest route.  the job of the rest of us was to scream and cheer.

race day

race day

then the officials had a quiet meeting as the preschoolers sat and waited in their seats.  it was determined that by working together, by taking part in the relay, our class qualified for gold medals all around.

race day

with the theme song in the background and a podium made of blocks, each runner was called up and her time was announced.

race day

race day

we were all heroes.

race day

each of us runners.

race day

it was pretty exciting.

race day

“i can’t believe it’s real,” said the friend in the gray sweatshirt.

race day

happy blessed race days.

  1. I echo the comment from Shanna – I just discovered you last week, and read every post to the beginning. I am AMAZED. What I love the most is how you personally have such a sense of awe about the whole thing! My kids bring home all kinds of art projects from daycare all the time, and I have never been as inspired by the creativity and process behind it as you clearly are. You must be the most wonderful teacher in the world. Can I send my kids to your school? :)
Keep up the great posts and the beautiful pictures. You are inspirational.

  2. oh kristin….annie was so excited about this.
then when she got in the car afterwards she said “i wasn’t the fastest.” she was SURE she was going to be. i said “but you got a medal…how exciting!” and she said “it’s not even real because it’s not even cold”
    i thought that was hysterical.
she could tell it was plastic because a metal medal would felt cold.
but she quickly recovered and still proudly shows her not real medal to anyone who comes in our house. :)

  3. Kristin, The way you work with, plan for, and document children and their development leaves me speechless. And so painfully envious on behalf of my kids and family.

  5. So I discovered you on Sat. and read; and read ; and read….. I am so inspired by the environment you have created!!!! I have read the other posts and realize I am not the ONLY one who wants to jump on a plane and be a friend in your class! I just want to relish in all things Pre-K through your eyes. LOL OK Now I am sounding just stalkerish! Today with my Pre-K friends I put to work some of your ideas… they fell in love too!
    Thank you!
